Remo announce Michael departure to Austria

Remo Stars have confirmed that midfielder Tochukwu Michael has completed a move to Austrian Bundesliga side Wolfsberger AC, marking the latest step in the young Nigerian’s rise through the ranks of domestic and international football, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The Ikenne-based club announced on Thursday that an agreement in principle had been reached with Wolfsberger, thanking the 21-year-old for his service and wishing him success in Europe.

“Agreement reached in principle for the transfer of Tochukwu Michael to Wolfsberger AC. The club appreciates the midfielder and wishes him a successful time in Austria,” the club posted on its official X account.

Wolfsberger, known as RZ Pellets WAC for sponsorship reasons, confirmed the transfer in a statement earlier, revealing that Michael had signed a three-year contract.

“RZ Pellets WAC announces the signing of Tochukwu Michael Raymond on deadline day. The central midfielder comes to the Lavant Valley from Remo Stars FC, for whom he scored two goals and provided four assists in 34 appearances last season, and signs a three-year contract in the Wolf Pack,” the Austrian club stated.

The club added that the Nigerian midfielder would arrive in Austria once visa formalities were completed after representing his country at the African Nations Championship.

“In recent weeks, the 21-year-old Nigerian has been in action for his home country at the African Nations Championship before he is expected in Wolfsberg after the visa modalities have been completed,” the statement continued.

Michael’s move comes after an impressive campaign in the Nigeria Premier Football League, where he helped Remo Stars to a top finish while standing out for his playmaking ability. His two goals and four assists last season reflected his growing influence in midfield.

He featured for Nigeria’s home-based Super Eagles at the 2024 African Nations Championship, playing in all three group matches before the team’s early exit.

The midfielder also featured in Remo’s NPFL season opener against Rivers United this term, just days after returning from national team duty, which underlines his importance to Daniel Ogunmodede’s side before the transfer was finalised.

Michael has since arrived in Austria and resumed full training with Wolfsberger. Speaking after his first session, he expressed delight at joining the Austrian side and pledged to give his best for the team.

“It feels great to be here. I’m looking forward to learning, growing, and contributing to the club’s success,” he said as quoted by Sports247.

Wolfsberger’s technical staff described him as a hardworking and technically sound player capable of dictating play from midfield. The club’s manager, Dietmar Kühbauer, is expected to integrate the Nigerian gradually as he adapts to the pace of European football.

Michael joins a growing contingent of Nigerian players at Wolfsberger, including Chibuike Nwaiwu, Chukwu Emmanuel, and Harrison Austine, who recently moved from Ikorodu City FC. The strong Nigerian presence is expected to ease his transition into the squad.
