All you need to know about the Nigerian civil war

The Nigerian Civil War, also known as the Biafran War, remains one of the most significant and tragic events in Nigeria's history. Lasting from 1967 to 1970, this conflict had far-reaching consequences for the country and its people, leaving a deep scar that continues to influence Nigerian society to this day.

Causes of the conflict

The roots of the Nigerian Civil War can be traced back to the complex ethnic, political, and economic dynamics of the newly independent nation. Nigeria, a diverse country with over 250 distinct ethnic groups, was struggling to unite its various regions and ethnicities. The underlying issues that led to the war were primarily:

Ethnic Tensions: Nigeria's population is composed of numerous ethnic groups, with the Igbo people in the southeast, Yoruba in the southwest, and Hausa-Fulani in the north being the three largest. These ethnic groups had different cultures, languages, and historical experiences, leading to tensions and competition for resources and power.

Political Instability: Corruption, electoral fraud, and political power struggles plagued Nigeria's early post-independence years. This instability led to a lack of trust in the government and further exacerbated ethnic tensions.

Economic Disparities: Regional economic imbalances contributed to the conflict. The oil-rich Niger Delta region, predominantly in the southeast, was a significant source of wealth, but the benefits were not equally distributed across the country.
