Rafael Varane retires from international football at 29

France international Raphael Varane has announced his retirement from international football at age 29.

The Manchester United defender called time on his illustrious 9-year international career with Les Blue on Thursday, February 2 after 93 caps.

In a statement released via his social media, the former Real Madrid defender said: "I will miss these moments with you for sure, but the time has come for the new generation to take over. We have a bunch of talented young players who are ready to take over, who deserve a chance, and who need you," he wrote on Instagram.

Varane made his international debut in a World Cup qualifier against Georgia in 2012.

He was instrumental in the France team that won the FIFA World Cup in 2018.

His last appearance for Les Blue came in the 2022 World Cup final against Argentina in Qatar.
