Former president of South Africa and Head of the Commonwealth Observation Mission in Nigeria Thabo Mbeki has pleaded with Bola Tinubu, the president-elect, to remember the African continent when he takes office.

A statement made by Tinubu's aide, Tunde Rahman, on Friday, March 3, revealed that Mbeki had discussed the completion of the Commonwealth Observer Mission with Tinubu when he visited him at his Abuja residence on Thursday, March 2.

The former South African president who noted that the 2023 polls was fair and credible, advised Tinubu to use the entire African continent as his compass when he assumes office.

He said: “Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa with a big economy. Whatever happens here sets the pace for the rest of Africa. We need a strong Nigerian presidency that will also focus on the African region.

“Your opponent will be looking for the smallest thing to throw stones. That is the way of democracy."

Tinubu in response assured Thabo Mbeki of his commitment to advancing economic and political unity in Africa.

The president-elect pledged to collaborate with Mbeki and other African leaders to secure the prosperity of the continent.
