The autopsy ordered by the police on the body of 14-year-old schoolgirl, Karen Akpagher, has revealed that she died of diabetes.

This is according to a statement by the school, Premiere Academy, as well as a copy of the interim report which was sighted by The PUNCH on Monday. The interim report found that the deceased’s “vagina was empty and contained no pus or any foreign material.”

The post-mortem also examined the uterine cervix and found that “it was conical and closed. Its external opening (external os) was tightly closed and round. The covering is clean, displaying no lacerations or excoriations. The canal of the cervix (endocervical canal) is empty and contains no foreign body material. The internal opening (internal os) was unremarkable.”

The summary of autopsy fingered severe high blood sugar of 435.6 mg/dl, triggering “acute cerebral oedema, acute pulmonary oedema, and acute liver congestion as cause of death, and not sepsis.”The mother of the deceased, Mrs Vihimga Akpagher, had told The PUNCH that her daughter, who was a student of SS1, had died on June 19, 2021, barely two days after she returned from school.

She alleged that her child, who had diabetes, had fallen ill and she took her to Queen Hospital, Wuse Zone 6, where a decayed condom was found in her private parts along with dead sperm leading to sepsis and death.

However, in a letter titled, ‘Re: Keren Akpagher: Police autopsy report shows student died of diabetes’, the school management said the report was revealed by the police in the presence of representatives of Karen’s family and other interested parties.

Abuja school distorting facts on my 14-year-old daughter’s death – MotherSS2 girl missing in Abuja school after permission to fix uniform The statement read in part, “The Nigerian Police invited the school and the family of the late student on Wednesday, 8 September, 2021 to brief us on the outcome of the report of the autopsy examination conducted on Wednesday, 7 July, 2021 by its appointed consultant pathologist, Dr Desmond Okonkwo, the principal pathologist at the Maitama General Hospital, Abuja.

“According to Mr Pam Joseph, a Deputy Commissioner of Police, and the head of the investigation team in charge of Miss Akpagher’s case, who briefed the parties, the autopsy report revealed that the late Miss Keren Akpagher died of hyperglycaemia (high blood sugar), a complication arising from diabetes mellitus.

The report further revealed that no disease was observed.”According to the school, the police also informed parties in attendance that the report is an interim one as the final report will only be due after the police investigation team must have carried out a DNA test on the condom the doctor at Queens Clinic Abuja claimed to have recovered from Karen’s private parts prior to her death.

The mother of the deceased, however, insisted that her daughter died of sepsis.“My lawyer said when asked if rape could have caused her death, they said it could be the trigger. So, right from the onset, I didn’t say rape was cause of death, I said it led to the sepsis which triggered the cause of death. What I am after is who left the condom in my daughter,” Mrs Akpagher said.
