Nnamdi Kanu, the embattled leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has alleged some government officials are benefitting from the insecurity challenges that have plagued the Southeast region of Nigeria.

Kanu made the allegation when he spoke to journalists after his bail application was ruled out by Justice Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday, March 19.

In a video that has gone viral after his court hearing, the IPOB promised peace would return to the region immediately after his release from the Department of State Services (DSS) custody.

The IPOB leader said: “I suspect that some people in government are complicit. They are making money with this insecurity. They know if Nnamdi Kanu is outside, this nonsense will stop in two minutes.”

“Anybody involved in any form of violence in the South-East in the name of IPOB, let me come out of this nonsense, this mess, only two minutes, I guarantee you, and there will be peace in the South-East.”

Kanu has been in the custody of the DSS following his arrest and extradition in Kenya in June 2021.

He is currently facing charges of treasonable felony. He told the court that he was not being treated well by the secret police and alleged that there was a conspiracy for him to die in the DSS custody

The trial judge Justice Nyako granted an accelerated hearing instead of bail.

Counsel for the IPOB leader, Alloy Ejimakor, had at the last adjourned date urged the court to admit Nnamdi Kanu to bail before the commencement of the trial.

Ejimakor stated that Kanu’s health condition was deteriorating, adding that his continued detention by the DSS was a threat to his life.
