Political leaders must resist the temptation to weaponise ethnicity or religion - Religious group urges

A non-denominational pressure group, the Christian Conscience, has urged Nigerian politicians to focus on issue-based campaigns and refrain from stoking ethnic or religious sentiments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a joint statement signed by National Chairman Yetunde Akinluyi and National Secretary-General Kolawole Verrals, the group stressed that campaign discussions should center on critical sectors impacting national development—including security, healthcare, education, job creation, and economic growth.

"Politicians should campaign with issues, not insults. Nigerians deserve to know what candidates intend to do about jobs, security, education, healthcare, infrastructure and the economy. Campaigns should be about presenting credible ideas and demonstrating the competence to deliver them," the group stated.

The organization cautioned political actors against using divisive rhetoric to gain political advantage, reminding candidates that maintaining national unity is paramount regardless of personal ambition.

"Nigeria belongs to all of us. Political leaders must resist the temptation to weaponise ethnicity or religion. Statements capable of inflaming ethnic, religious or regional tensions have no place in a healthy democracy. Political disagreement should never become personal hatred," the statement added.

In addition to denouncing political violence, voter intimidation, and the use of thugs, the group called on the electorate to evaluate candidates based on their character, competence, and past track records rather than partisan or regional ties.

Meanwhile, the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has separately cautioned broadcasters, online publishers, and content creators to avoid disseminating hate speech, unverified claims, or inflammatory materials that could threaten peaceful elections, urging media outlets to provide fair and balanced political coverage.
