The police in Zamfara state have imposed a 24-hour curfew in Bakura and Talata Mafara local government areas after two persons were killed and several others injured following clashes between rival political thugs.

According to a report by Daily Trust, the thugs also destroyed several vehicles and billboards in the areas.

Legit.ng gathers that the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in Charge of Zone 10, Mustapha Muhammad, said the curfew was to avoid further breakdown of law and order.

There has been tension in the state as two leading candidates of the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) and the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ended campaigns on Thursday, December 3, at the same time.

Though there are 12 other candidates in the state House of Assembly by-election, the contest is believed to be mainly between APC’s Bello Dankande Gamji and PDP’s Tukur Ibrahim Tudu.

The election is scheduled to hold on Saturday, December 5, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Meanwhile, Alhaji Ibrahim Wakkala Muhammad, a former deputy governor of Zamfara state, has dumped the APC and defected to the PDP.

Alhaji Muhammad, who deputised former Governor Abdulaziz Yari from 2011 to 2019, on Wednesday, December 2, announced his decision after meeting with his key supporters in Gusau, the Zamfara state capital.
