Police crack down on traffic offenders in Delta, prosecute 68

No fewer than 68 traffic offenders were on Saturday prosecuted at Mobile Courts sitting in Warri and Asaba, as well as at the Magistrate Court in Okwe, Delta State.

The prosecutions followed intensified traffic enforcement operations on major roads across the state by the Delta State Police Command, in collaboration with designated judges and magistrates of the Mobile Courts, as part of the state government’s commitment to curb the rising trend of traffic violations.

The initiative also forms part of broader efforts to promote compliance with traffic regulations and ensure the safety of residents across Delta State.

These were contained in a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer for the Delta State Command, SP Bright Edafe, copies of which were made available to journalists in Warri on Sunday.

According to the statement, the offenders were apprehended for various traffic infractions.

It listed the offences to include seven persons charged for unauthorised use of number plates, five for driving against traffic, 15 for operating vehicles without registration numbers, two for illegal use of sirens and revolving lights, 15 for road obstruction, 13 for driving with covered number plates, and 11 for driving without valid driver’s licences.

The police spokesman noted that vehicles with unregistered or concealed number plates are often used to commit crimes and evade security checks at various checkpoints.

“All offenders were fined in accordance with the provisions of the Delta State Traffic Management Law and the National Road Traffic Regulations, reinforcing the consequences of violating traffic laws,” the statement read in part.

The command said it is strengthening collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps and the Delta State Traffic Management Agency to curb traffic offences and enhance public safety across the state.

According to the police, the partnership is aimed at ensuring coordinated enforcement, reducing traffic-related incidents, and improving security on Delta roads.

The command urged motorists to comply with traffic regulations, ensure their vehicles are properly registered, and carry valid driver’s licences at all times.

It reaffirmed its commitment to a zero-tolerance stance on traffic violations, stressing that decisive action would continue to be taken to safeguard lives and maintain order on the state’s roads.
