The police in Ekiti State have arrested kidnap syndicates allegedly responsible for series of abductions in the state.

The state police command added that the kidnappers operated in Ekiti and Kogi State. The Commissioner of Police in the state, Tunde Mobayo, who said the police were still making efforts to arrest other members of the syndicate on the run, announced “N5m reward for anyone who supplies credible information concerning the whereabouts of the fleeing suspects.”

Those arrested by operatives of the Police Rapid Response Squad included one Bunmi Ogunremi and Ige Adu, a tyre vulcaniser for multiple kidnappings and other crimes.

Also, a woman, Fayoke Taiwo, who confessed that she was the food supplier to the kidnap suspects whenever they were holding victims hostage, was also arrested.

Mobayo, who was represented by the Police Public Relations Officer, Ekiti State Command, Sunday Abutu, while parading the suspects, said items recovered from the suspects at the time of arrest included five locally-made barrel guns, a Toyota Corolla, 13 rounds of live cartridges and two locally-made double-barrel guns.

According to him, the suspects confessed participation in the abductions at different places and times of persons including a petrol merchant, Alhaji Sulaiman Akinbami; wife of former surveyor-general of Ekiti, Mrs Funmi Osalusi; one Bolaji Olowo; and the late Chief Abiodun Ajayi.

The police spokesperson said, “The suspects said they keep the victims in a house in the waterworks area of Ado Ekiti and sometimes move them to Ayere Forest in Kogi State.”

The vulcanizer told journalists, “I was the one who identified Alhaji Akinbami for the kidnappers. I also participated in the kidnap of Mrs Osalusi. I was given N100,000 on Akinbami’s abduction, while I received N450,000 for the second operation.”

Also, Bunmi Ogunremi, who said he had carried out four operations in Ekiti with tentacles spread to the neighbouring Osun, Kogi and Ondo states, said, “When we started, my duty was to drive the kidnappers who are now at large. I drove Alhaji Akinbami and the former surveyor-general’s wife to our hideout in Kogi. I have only been involved in four kidnap operations.”
