Police arrest 60-year-old man for alleged attempt to bomb Bayelsa secretariat

A suspected improvised explosive device (IED) detonated at the Bayelsa State Secretariat Complex in Yenagoa on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, triggering a rapid security response.

Authorities subsequently detained 60-year-old Pentecost Elijah from Otuan Community in Southern Ijaw LGA, Bayelsa State, in connection with the event.

Commissioner of Police CP Iyamah said, “The Bayelsa State Police Command wishes to inform the public of a suspected IED explosion which occurred today, 11th February 2026, at about 0600hrs within the State Secretariat Complex.”

“Also the suspect is currently undergoing interrogation at the State Criminal Investigation Department, and upon conclusion, the suspect will be charged in court,” the police added.

Elijah reportedly said he carried out the act due to alleged negligence regarding his illness and intended to draw attention to his situation. Authorities assured that the situation is under control and that normalcy has been restored.
