The police in Kano State have arrested a 21-year-old man, Kabiru Mahmud, with 49 parcels of Indian hemp which he said belonged to his father.

Mahmud was arrested at Danbare while taking the substance from his family home at Gadonkaya Quarters after receiving information that his father had been arrested.

The suspect said the Indian hemp belonged to his father and that he decided to take it away from the house to hide it elsewhere. He said his mother had also been arrested. Mahmud, who admitted he was taking the Indian hemp to his friend at Danbare, told police that his father had been in the Indian hemp business for about 20 years.

The police spokesperson in Kano, Abdullahi Kiyawa, said the command received intelligence report of a young man with some sacks believed to contain Indian hemp.

Kiyawa said, “Immediately after, the Commissioner of Police, Habu A. Sani, mobilised Operation Puff Adder under Bashir Muhammad Gwadabe, to arrest the suspect.”

Kiyawa, who said the police also arrested Mahmud’s uncle and mother, added that the Commissioner of Police had directed the case to be transferred to the state Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further investigation.
