Super Falcons defender Ashleigh Plumptre has opened up on why she shed tears following Nigeria's remarkable triumph at the 2024 African Women's Cup of Nations.

The former Leicester City defender was instrumental as the Falcons staged a brilliant comeback from two goals down to beat hosts Morocco 3-2 to clinch their 10th WAFCON title.

Plumptre displayed a solid defensive performance for the Super Falcons throughout the tournament alongside Osinachi Ohale and Oluwatosin Demehin, as Nigeria conceded just one goal from open play.

Speaking following Nigeria's brilliant display, Plumptre said:

"It's really like... Honestly, it's not about winning the trophy specifically. I said it before, it's like the journey getting to this point," Plumptre said via Victor Ademola TV, as per Kini Score.

"The connection—just way bigger than me. Like, how I'm able to play. Like the shirt, part of my heritage. So powerful.

"The fans are supporting me, and I feel the love from them. So when I cry, it's just like the power of the green and white... representing something bigger than you."
