Peter Obi betrayed Ojukwu, hence can never be President - Yul Edochie

Popular Nollywood actor Yul Edochie has stated that he does not see a possibility of former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi becoming President of Nigeria.

Speaking during a recent episode of the Honest Bunch Podcast, Edochie argued that Obi’s political journey took a wrong turn after leaving the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), insisting that the former presidential candidate’s political “mantle” remains with the party.

Peter Obi, who contested the 2023 presidential election and lost to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has continued to remain a major figure in Nigeria’s political landscape. However, Edochie claimed Obi’s political fortunes declined after his exit from APGA.

According to the actor, Obi had made a commitment to the late Biafran leader, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, that he would never leave the party.

“Peter Obi can’t be president. Peter Obi’s mantle is in APGA and not in the NDC,” Edochie said.

“He swore before Ojukwu, the great Ojukwu who held his hand and introduced him to Anambra people as his candidate, that he would never leave. That is why since he left, he hasn’t achieved anything,” he added.

The actor’s remarks have since sparked reactions online, especially among supporters of the former Labour Party presidential candidate.

Edochie had earlier stirred controversy after criticising Obi over what he described as a failure to embody the true spirit of Ndi Igbo leadership.

In a post shared on social media, the actor questioned Obi’s record of empowering others despite his success in business and politics.

“The true spirit of Ndi Igbo is ‘onye aghana nwanne ya’ (leave no brother behind). As you rise, you lift others,” Edochie wrote.

He further argued that Obi’s inability to significantly impact people around him raises concerns about his ability to address poverty at the national level.

“If you cannot lift people around you out of poverty, you simply cannot lift Nigeria out of poverty,” he stated.
