People to vote electronically as INEC begins automation of electoral process

INEC said it has begun full automation of electoral process in Nigeria

This means Nigerians will be voting electronically in the future election

The body also assured that the revolution will see the election results uploaded right from the polling units

Apparently committed to free and fair election in Nigeria, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said it has begun complete migration into e-voting system.

Mahmood Yakubu, chairman of the electoral umpire, made this disclosure in Abuja on Monday, September 28, The Nation report.

Yakubu said INEC has been putting measures in place towards full automation of the electoral process in Nigeria, adding that the commission will channel fresh innovations towards the election system in a way that will ensure transparency and credibility of elections.

He also stated that over 40 companies and manufacturers of the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) will be invited to demonstrate to the commission on how their IT solutions meet INEC specifications.

Yakubu noted that over the years, INEC has revolutionised the electoral process by introducing the biometric machine for the registration and accreditation of the voters in addition to the Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC) and the Smart Card Reader (SCR).

The INEC boss also added that part of the revolution is how the commission is uploading the result of the election to its portal from the polling unit level as demonstrated in the Edo guber poll.

“Today, the commission is taking yet another decisive step towards the full automation of the electoral process.

Legit.ng recalls that INEC previously declared that it would work towards the full introduction of electronic voting in major elections, starting from 2021

The electoral commission said this in its new policy on conducting elections released amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a related development, INEC said Z-pad used during the Edo state governorship election for the transmission of Polling Units (PUs) results would be deployed for the Ondo state poll.
