People cannot sit at home without electricity for 2 months, Femi reminds FG

Speaker of Nigeria's House of Representatives, Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila has tasked the Ministry of Finance, Petroleum; CBN Governor, NNPC boss, and the Director-General of Nigeria's Budget Office to provide free electricity to Nigeria for two months.

According to the speaker, sitting at home for two weeks is a long time and what will bring succour to the people is providing basic amenities. Something that their West African counterparts, Ghana has perfectly done.

It is simple basic common sense that you cannot ask people to sit at home for two weeks; with a possibility of extension and not provide them with the basic necessity of life.

"Personally there is no stimulus that will gain traction without that," Gbajabiamila said.

"If the average man pays N10,000 for electricity in a month and you tell him Government would subsidize electricity for two months unfailingly. What you have done is freeing up N10,000 for him to spend," the Speaker argued.

Comparing this proposal to what Ghana next door has done, he charged the stakeholders to make sure every Nigerian enjoys free electricity for two months, uninterrupted.

This is in line with the recent clamour led by the Speaker and the House of Representatives to provide stable electricity during the lockdown period.
