'Peller culture is taking over' — Ycee laments rise of anti-intellectualism in Nigeria

Nigerian rapper Ycee has sparked debate after criticizing what he described as the growing "Peller culture" in the country.

Speaking during a podcast, the rapper expressed concern that Nigerian society is increasingly celebrating ignorance while placing less value on education and intellectual achievement.

According to Ycee, the country is witnessing an "Olodo uprising," where people who promote anti-intellectual ideas are gaining influence, while academic excellence continues to lose relevance.

He argued that beyond the physical threats facing the nation, such as insecurity and kidnappings, there is also a growing attack on education and critical thinking.

The rapper's comments have generated mixed reactions online.

While many Nigerians agreed with his concerns, saying social media now rewards entertainment and viral content over knowledge and education, others blamed the government, unemployment, and the harsh economic climate for the shift in societal values.

Some also defended content creators like Peller, arguing that they are simply making the most of opportunities in the digital space and should not be blamed for their success.

The conversation has since reignited debates about the influence of social media, the declining value placed on education, and what the trend could mean for Nigeria's future.

@DrEazzyOfficial___"This dude is so intelligent and eloquent. Hes not wrong..but the simple reason why the olodo/peller culture is on the uprise is simply because majority of Nigerians themselves are Olodos..People who say we are intelligent simply just exaggerate individual success we have seen over the years"

@SuitWalk___"That PELLER culture he said is for PELLER alone to reply , YALL should focus on all the important issues he talked about which is 100% on point … Watch the olodos leave important message and focus on the peller part. Truly olodo uprising is messing us up…. Olodos"
