Investigative journalist David Hundeyin suspects that Bristol Tamunobiefiri, a social commentator behind the popular X-handle PIDOMNigeria, may be dead.
The Nigeria Police Force announced the arrest of the anonymous whistleblower on X.com, 99% Oppressed on on August 5 in his hotel room in Rivers State by officials from the National Cybercrime Center for undermining the integrity of government operations.
Following the arrest, Hundeyin, who has had run-ins with the Nigerian government, said he expected nothing but the worst from the state. Documenting his encounter with an unknown individual following Tamunobiefiri's arrest, he stated that the state has tried unsuccessfully to "rope me into the poor attempt at narrative concealment."
"I have decided to go public with this because something I have learned in my years of interaction with state actors in Nigeria is to always expect the worst, and nothing but the worst. Personally, I suspect that my friend PIDOM is - at the very least - in serious mortal jeopardy, and may in fact be dead. This would explain why the Nigerian state has - in its characteristically cack-handed, Mickey Mouse fashion - tried to rope me into this poor attempt at narrative concealment," Hundeyin wrote on his blog.
David Hundeyin reported that PIDOMNigeria had been missing since August 5 after an associate of PIDOM contacted him.
Hundeyin’s comment generated a massive outcry on social media, with a campaign launched to demand the whereabouts of PIDOMNigeria using hashtags like #PIDOM, #FreePidom, and #WhereisPidom, among others.
In a statement on Saturday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, the police said other allegations against PIDOMNigeria are unlawful possession, leakages of classified documents, and cyber-related offenses.
