The appeal court sitting in Jos, Plateau state, has upheld the declaration of Mohammed Alkali Gwani of the People’s Redemption Party (PRP) as the winner of the Jos North/Bassa federal constituency’s by-election.

The court then dismissed an appeal filed by Musa Agah Azia of the Peoples Democratic Party, challenging the victory of Goni in the February 26 by-election, The Nation reported.

The court further ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to issue a certificate of return to Goni, and he should be sworn in with immediate effect.

The tribunal had earlier sacked the PDP candidate in its judgement, which held that Agah was not validly nominated by the umbrella party for the Bye-election it held on February 26, earlier this year.

The court also stated that the PDP candidate, Agah, did not garner the highest number of valid votes in the election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Aggah as the winner of the Jos North/Bassa federal constituency bye-election, which was held on February 26.

The sacked lawmaker polled a total of 40,343 votes before he was declared the winner by the electoral body.

Mohammed Gwani of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), his closest rival, garnered 37,857 votes, while Joseph Aku, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, came third with 26,111 votes in the bye-election.
