After a year in office, the German government has expressed its views on President Bola Tinubu's administration.
The German Ambassador to Nigeria, Annett Gunther, in a recent interview, commended President Tinubu's reformative agenda.
She highlighted the administration's decisive actions in addressing issues of insecurity, corruption, and challenges within the oil sector as commendable initiatives.
President Tinubu, who was sworn in on May 29, 2023, pledged to lead Nigeria towards a path of prosperity.
Ambassador Gunther encouraged the current government to maintain its dedication to economic reforms, which are believed to be pivotal for stabilizing and fortifying Nigeria's economy.
“The nation’s economic reforms were long overdue, and it took Tinubu courage to implement them, knowing they would come with short-term costs like inflation.
“I would not say the president has done everything, but he is on the right track, and we are eager to support and work together to make meaningful progress and achieve this goal,” Gunther remarked.
On the topic of national security, the Ambassador emphasized the urgent need to curb the widespread incidents of kidnapping, killings, and other crimes.
She disclosed Germany's commitment to assist Nigeria in overcoming its security challenges, asserting that such cooperation would enhance transparency and facilitate nation-building.
“We have been working closely with the National Security Adviser and Inspector General of Police.
“We have been actively engaged in police reforms in Nigeria.
“We have experienced former German police officers who have trained more than 1,000 trainers in Nigeria, who have trained many other police officers.
“We have also equipped and refurbished the police training college, and we are proud to be the largest donor in this area, and it did not happen overnight.
“We are working with the administration to progress in governance and security,” Gunther concluded.
