The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the death of one person and injuries to five others following a violent clash during a political rally organised by the Obedient/OK Movement in support of the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Asaba on Saturday, November 7, 2026.
Focus Naija can report that the incident reportedly occurred at about 12:15 p.m. along Nnebisi Road, Asaba, throwing the area into tension.
In a press release issued on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed that the Command had received intelligence reports suggesting a possible outbreak of violence ahead of the rally.
According to the police, the organisers were invited to a security meeting, where they were briefed on identified security threats and advised against conducting an open road procession.
The police said the organisers were instead encouraged to hold their political activities at a designated venue where adequate security arrangements could be provided. However, the organisers allegedly ignored the advice and proceeded with the road procession.
Following a distress call, police operatives reportedly mobilised to the scene and evacuated the injured victims to the hospital for medical attention. Security was also reinforced in the affected area to prevent further breakdown of law and order.
The identities of the deceased and injured persons have yet to be established, while investigations have commenced to determine the circumstances surrounding the violence and identify those responsible.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Samuel E. Erale, condemned the violence, stressing that political parties are at liberty to conduct lawful campaigns and other political activities.
He, however, urged political parties and their supporters to avoid road processions in the interest of public safety and always liaise with the police ahead of political gatherings to ensure adequate security arrangements.
The Commissioner assured residents of the Command's commitment to a thorough and impartial investigation.
Members of the public with useful information concerning the incident have been urged to contact the Delta State Police Command through 09155570008 or 09155570007.
The police have reiterated the need for political actors and their supporters to prioritise peace, restraint and public safety in the conduct of political activities.
