Ondo police arrest suspected armed robber, recover locally-made pistol

The Ondo State Police Command under the leadership of CP Adebowale Lawal psc(+), mnips has recorded another operational breakthrough in its sustained campaign against violent crimes and illegal possession of firearms, following the arrest of a suspected armed robber by operatives of the command in Akure.

The arrest was made possible through credible intelligence received sometime in May 2026 regarding the activities of one Idowu Babayemi ‘M’ of Abusoro Street, Akure, who was allegedly involved in suspected armed robbery within the area.

Acting swiftly on the intelligence, operatives placed the suspect under discreet surveillance as part of an intelligence-led operation aimed at preventing criminal activities and ensuring public safety. Consequently, while operatives were on routine patrol along the Onimalu area on 7th May, 2026, the suspect was sighted and immediately intercepted. A search conducted on him led to the recovery of a locally made pistol concealed in his possession.

The successful operation further demonstrates the Command’s proactive and intelligence-driven policing strategy targeted at curbing armed robbery, illegal arms proliferation and other criminal activities across the State.

The Commissioner of Police commended the officers involved in the operation for their vigilance, professionalism and dedication to duty. He reiterated the Command’s unwavering resolve to sustain aggressive operations against criminal elements threatening the peace and security of Ondo State.

The CP also appreciated the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, for his continued support, strategic leadership, and commitment to strengthening intelligence-based policing and tactical efficiency across Commands nationwide.

Investigation into the matter is ongoing while the suspect will be charged to court upon conclusion of it.
