In a recent Interview on TVC Entertainment on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, Bishop Stephen Adegbite, Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrims Commission, reflected on the relationship between religious leaders and politics, urging clerics to avoid actions that could further polarise the country.

While discussing reactions to the 2023 presidential election, Adegbite recalled that "In 2023, when BAT was declared the winner, Archbishop Cardinal John Onaiyekan said, 'He will not recognise the president.'" He argued that although individuals are entitled to their political preferences, the outcome declared by the electoral process should be respected unless overturned by the courts.

According to Adegbite, Nigerians had already voted, and a president had been declared, making it important for national institutions and influential figures to recognise the constitutional process while legal challenges were ongoing. He maintained that political disagreements should not undermine confidence in democratic institutions.

The cleric also stated that religious leaders are free to support candidates of their choice but should avoid attacking or discrediting other candidates. Instead, he encouraged them to present the strengths of their preferred candidates and allow citizens to make informed decisions at the ballot box.

Beyond politics, Adegbite spoke on the influence of social media, describing it as a powerful tool that should be used responsibly. He cautioned that careless public statements can spread rapidly online, making it difficult to correct misinformation or heal divisions once they have taken root.

He concluded by encouraging Nigerians to embrace constructive dialogue, pray for those in authority, and ensure that future elections remain peaceful. He added that national unity and development would be better served when political competition is conducted with respect, tolerance, and a commitment to the country's collective progress.
