Super Eagles defender Kenneth Omeruo believes Nigeria were unlucky in the friendly against Mali on Tuesday night.

The 2023 AFCON finalists stumbled to a 2-0 defeat against an impressive Malian side at the Stade de Grande in Marrakech, Morocco.

Goals from El Bilal Toure and Kamorou Dounmbia sealed a convincing victory for the Eagles in what was their first victory over Nigeria in 49 years.

The Finidi George-led team failed to replicate their remarkable performance against Ghana on Friday, March 22 where they beat their rivals 2-1.

Speaking in a post-match reaction, Omeruo noted that the team played well but failed to put away their chances.

“I think we played a better second half, it wasn’t a bad game, we just didn’t take our chances and they scored two goals. Overall, I think we played a good game,” Omeruo told NFF TV.

“I think it was a good outing for us, fantastic spirit. The players that were here gave their best. We just couldn’t score in the game.”

Nigeria will now switch their attention to the World Cup qualifiers in June.
