A video has surfaced showing the moment the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, was snubbed by the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja.
The incident happened at an event attended by both monarchs, who were seated beside each other.
The video showed the Olubadan approaching the tent where the Alaafin was seated. After sitting beside the Alaafin, the Olubadan apparently acted as if he didn't notice Oba Owoade's stretched hand seeking a handshake.
Reacting, a netizen on X, @Ayoappeal, said, "There’s obviously an issue between them, but notwithstanding, he is supposed to stand up to greet the Olubadan, some of you don’t know the history of the Alafin and Olubadan, you’re only arguing from a superiority standpoint. Go and educate yourself first."
Also, @bissiriyu said, "The Alaafin of Oyo was not wrong to have stretched his hand to greet the Olubadan of Ibadan but I believe the both of them had issues before the event or the Olubadan felt that the Alaafin was too young for him to have stretched forth his hand which is wrong but then, Alaafin too behaves this way to other kings."
@HammedFal said, "When Ooni stretched hand to greet Oba of Lagos and Oba of Lagos snubbed Ooni, was he not criticised? If Ladoja is bigger than Olubadan, he should contest for senator."
@seekthedreamer said, "This is disrespect from Olu Ibadan towards Alafin, in Yoruba tradition, it's a sign of respect for a higher-ranking Oba to remain seated when greeting a lower-ranking king. Monarchy isn't about age or status; it's about the throne. You're respecting the throne, not the person."
@ceelapdes said, "This isn't a full video and it doesn't look like snub Olubadan is holding a walking stick in his right hand, he barely sat when someone was at his back calling his attention and besides Alaafin should have look for other way to greet than stretching his hand, we preach culture."
