Old photos of Wike and newly appointed administrator of Rivers spark controversy

Old photos of Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and former Governor of Rivers State, shaking hands with Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas (rtd) have sparked massive reactions on social media.

The images surfaced shortly after President Bola Tinubu, in a nationwide broadcast, announced a State of Emergency and the suspension of Governor Sim Fubara, his deputy, and members of the House of Assembly in Rivers State.

President Tinubu also appointed Admiral Ibokette Ibas as the administrator of Rivers State affairs.

Journalist KC, who shared the photos on Facebook, highlighted several occasions where Wike and Ibas were seen exchanging pleasantries.

These photos have fueled speculation about Wike’s alleged involvement in the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State and raised questions about Tinubu’s neutrality, especially after he criticized Fubara for the demolition of the House of Assembly quarters during his public address on Tuesday, March 18, 2025.

Many believe Wike’s past relationship with Ibas suggests a calculated plan behind the recent State of Emergency declaration in Rivers.

As a result, Nigerians have taken to social media to voice their discontent, calling the appointment a setback for democracy.

Aminu Saed Kwaire: “PBaT is the worst president in Nigeria.”

Friday Odiri: “Fubara is learning in a very hard way”

Abraham Abodunrin: “Wickedly, Wike.”

Muhammad Harun Muhibbullah: “Tinubu is a dictator—his leadership style is worse than that of the military regime.”
