Nottingham Forest defender Ola Aina has weighed in on what it means to represent the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
The 29-year-old has been a constant figure in the team since making his Nigeria debut under Gernot Rohr in 2017.
Aina has gone on to win 49 caps for the Super Eagles and is yet to score his first goal for the three-time African champions.
Despite putting in a decent performance against Madagascar in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier opener, the former Torino defender was benched against Guinea-Bissau, with Eric Chelle opting for Bright Osayi-Samuel at right-back.
In a video shared on his personal YouTube channel, the Chelsea academy product detailed the demands of representing a country like Nigeria on the international stage.
"Playing for Nigeria is exciting. It's exciting, but at the same time, the expectations in Nigeria are just mad,” Aina said.
"It's not only from Nigeria, though. It's all of Africa—African giants for a reason. Because it's the whole continent watching, the expectations are always through the roof.
"Nigerians want to see good football. We could win games, but if we're not winning in good fashion, they start getting onto us. Obviously, when we win, they're happy, but they want to be entertained.
"I hear it; that's the way it's been for decades. But sometimes you just need to get the job done without necessarily putting on a show. The expectations make it hard sometimes, but it's part of the game.”
