Ifeanyi Okowa, the vice-presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has confirmed he is reaching out to the various disgruntled factions within the party that is opposed to his emergence as running mate.

Okowa, the governor of Delta State was picked by the presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar after what was described as extensive consultation by the party's hierarchy. The claims were, however, refuted by leading political members of the party who believe the decision to pick Okowa was orchestrated by the National Chairman of the party, Senator Iyorchia Ayuh.

This has also led to the resignation of Elder Godsday Orubebe, a former Minister of State under former President Goodluck Jonathan. In a letter addressed to Chairman Ayuh on Monday, June 20, Orubebe accused the party of sidelining the party's constitution which made it clear that the south must produce the next president.

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike who many believed will be picked as running mate is alleged to be in talks with the presidential aspirant of the NNPP, Rabiu Kwankwaso.

Addressing the discord that has trailed his selection as veep, Okowa told ARISE TV in an interview on Monday, June 20 that he is reaching out to his colleague governors and other stakeholders who may hold diverse opinions on the convention.

"I am reaching out to all my colleague governors because I know that we have to collective work and be committed to this ticket."

"Not just the governors, you’ll realize that we have just 13 governors. There are many other leaders who may have taken various positions during the convention but it is now for us to think PDP, now for us to think about Nigeria and to think about the rescue and the re-building in process."

"So it’s not about our individual thoughts anymore, it’s about the collective interest of this nation and the collective interest of our party."

"To that extent, we have already started work and reached out to a lot of my colleagues on phone. I have been able to contact some of the directly, and we’ve had some physical meetings. This is a process that is continuing and I do realize that beyond that, I have reached several other party structures."

"We have former Governors, former ministers and the board of trustees, we have many opinion leaders and beyond the PDP, we have to reach out to people that matter in this country."

"We have to reach out to the youth, we have to reach out to various ethnic groups, it is very important that we do all this. We also believe that as we are reaching out to the religious groups, the Christian and Muslims alike we need to reassure everyone that it’s well without nation."
