Over 100 groups, including the Obidient Peoples Party and the Advanced Democratic Alliance (ADA), have submitted applications to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to gain recognition as official political parties.
Leading the Obidient Peoples Party as its interim national chairman, Mr. Barry Avotu Johnson spearheads one of two groups inspired by the Obidient movement, a political force tied to Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate. The other group is the Progressive Obedients Party.
The ADA, meanwhile, emerges as the political vehicle for a coalition opposing President Tinubu, with prominent figures like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi, former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, and Dr. Umar Ardo, convener of the League of Northern Democrats, among its key members.
Speaking at INEC’s second quarterly meeting with media leaders in Abuja on Wednesday, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the commission’s chairman, emphasized that all applications are under review in strict compliance with legal requirements, with no group receiving special treatment.
