Former presidential aide Reno Omokri has said ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo misjudged and mischaracterised President Bola Tinubu.
In a Facebook post, Omokri cited the successes recorded by the Tinubu administration under two years to buttress his claim.
He also revealed how a star minister in the Obasanjo administration, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, who now heads the World Trade Organisation, recently praised Tinubu's economic policies.
He wrote, "Facts That Prove President Obasanjo Misjudged and Mischaracterised President Tinubu.
"President Obasanjo is very right that General Buhari was our worst President ever. I don't want to upset his family, who have just suffered a loss. If I have caused offence to them by this statement, I sincerely apologise. But that is a fact. Buhari took over a $500 billion economy from President Jonathan and handed over an economy that was less than half that to President Tinubu. Buhari was a disaster in governance. May his soul rest in peace.
"However, I disagree with President Obasanjo's statement in his new book, Nigeria: Past and Future, that 'Bola Tinubu’s administration seems to be competing with Buhari’s for now.'
"That I disagree does not in any way reflect a disrespect for President Obasanjo, who I consider a historical figure who has served Nigeria well in peacetime and war.
"I disagree based on principles, and I will forthwith state my reasons.
"President Tinubu added $67 billion to Nigeria's GDP in less than two years, moving us from a ₦269.29 trillion economy on May 29, 2023, when he became President, to ₦372.8 trillion today. No government in Nigeria's history has ever expanded Nigeria's economy by 25% in just two years.
"Also, our national debt has reduced from $108.2 billion on May 29, 2023, to $94.2 billion today. In Nigeria's history, only two civilian governments have been able to reduce the nation's indebtedness: the Obasanjo administration and now the Tinubu government.
"Additionally, according to the star minister in President Obasanjo's government, Dr. Mrs Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, President Tinubu has "stabilised" our economy, per the Director General of the World Trade Organisation.
"But it is in reforming Nigeria that President Tinubu has outperformed even his critics' expectations. No administration before this regime has been able to reform Nigeria's political economy as effectively as President Tinubu has, including military dictatorships.
"On Thursday, June 26, 2025, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed the Nigeria Tax Act, 2025, and its three associated Bills, including the Nigeria Tax Administration Bill, the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill, and the Joint Revenue Board (Establishment) Bill, collectively known as the Tax Reform Bills, into law.
"By those legislations, Asiwaju Tinubu ushered in a period of prosperity, equity, and social security that Nigeria has not seen since Majors Emmanuel Ifeajuna and Chukwuma Nzeogwu ended the First Republic via the January 15, 1966 coup.
"Then you come to the landmark Local Government Autonomy Bill, which grants both autonomy and prosperity to Nigeria's grassroots, from Kaura Namoda to Orile-Aguda.
"When you consider these facts and other realities, such as Nigeria's improvement in Transparency International's Corruption Perception Index and the Institute for Peace's Global Terror Index, it would appear that President Obasanjo may have misjudged President Tinubu. "
