Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has returned to South African Premiership side Chippa United, five months after announcing his departure from the club in anticipation of a transfer that ultimately failed to materialise.

Chippa United confirmed the Nigeria international’s return in a statement on Sunday, welcoming the shot-stopper back to the Eastern Cape ahead of the new season.

“Chippa United Football Club is delighted to welcome Stanley Nwabali back to the Chilli Boys.

“After taking time away, Stanley Nwabali returns to the Eastern Cape, and we are pleased to welcome him back to the club. His experience, leadership and presence will once again be a valuable addition to the squad as we continue preparations for the season ahead.

“Welcome back, Stanley. We wish you every success in Chippa United colours.”

Nwabali had bid an emotional farewell to Chippa United in February after expressing his desire to seek a new challenge following his impressive performances for both club and country.

The 29-year-old was widely expected to secure a move abroad after enhancing his reputation with standout displays for Nigeria at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, played in Côte d’Ivoire in early 2024, where the Super Eagles finished as runners-up. His consistent performances in the South African topflight also attracted interest from clubs in Europe and North Africa.

He left the club by mutual consent after the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, having again impressed for Nigeria at the continental tournament.

However, despite months of speculation, no transfer materialised, leaving the goalkeeper without a club during the off-season.

His return provides a major boost for Chippa United as they prepare for the 2026/27 campaign after finishing last season with 24 points, just four above the relegation zone.

Nwabali’s return also comes as a timely development for Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle, with the goalkeeper now set to resume regular competitive football ahead of Nigeria’s upcoming international fixtures.

During his spell without a club, Nwabali missed Nigeria’s last four matches, including high-profile international friendlies against Poland and Portugal.
