The Commissioner of Police in Benue State, CP Cletus Nwadiogbu, has issued a stern warning to political leaders and candidates against hiring cultists, political thugs, and criminal syndicates to disrupt opponents during political activities.

Speaking during a high-level security meeting and peace accord signing ceremony at the Police Command Headquarters in Makurdi, CP Nwadiogbu emphasized that the police force will enforce zero tolerance for electoral violence and voter intimidation.

The meeting brought together chairmen of political parties, political candidates, representatives of sister security agencies, and key electoral stakeholders.

According to a statement released on Thursday by the Command's Public Relations Officer, DSP Peter Aondongu, the peace pact aims to establish early security commitments, ensure orderly campaigns, and prevent political friction across the state.

"Addressing the gathering, the Commissioner of Police urged political leaders and candidates to ensure that their supporters conduct themselves peacefully and responsibly.

"He particularly warned against the recruitment or use of political thugs, cult groups, and other criminal elements to intimidate opponents or disrupt lawful political activities," the statement read.

CP Nwadiogbu reassured all political factions that the command will maintain absolute neutrality and provide equal security coverage for all lawful political rallies, provided organizers notify security agencies well in advance.

Party chairmen and candidates in attendance subsequently signed the Peace Accord, publicly pledging to reject political violence, abide by the rule of law, and cooperate with law enforcement throughout the political season.

Benue State has historically witnessed heightened political tension during local and national campaign seasons, where clashes between rival party youth wings, cult factions, and political thugs have periodically threatened public safety.
