The Obidient Movement has clarified that there are no negotiations or alliances between Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate, and ex-President Goodluck Jonathan. According to Yunusa Tanko, the movement's National Coordinator, no agreement exists between Obi and Jonathan aimed at unseating President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
This statement follows widespread speculation about Jonathan's potential bid in the upcoming 2027 presidential race. Although there's talk about Jonathan possibly returning to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), rumors also suggest he might consider joining the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Recently, Jonathan met with ADC leaders, including National Chairman David Mark and spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi, in Abuja, fueling further speculation. Meanwhile, Obi has yet to choose a political party for his 2027 run. Currently, he is part of the opposition coalition that has adopted the ADC and remains a full member of the Labour Party.
A recent private meeting between Jonathan and Obi has added more fuel to speculations of a potential alliance come 2027.
However, Tanko said: “My principal and the former president have a very good working relationship, and they know each other very well. So seeing them talk to each other does not mean anything.
“And it should not be translated to mean anything other than a platonic discussion on how to move this country forward.
“But I don’t think there’s anything more than that. No discussion or pact around 2027. Even when they met in Ghana, I was there. So there was nothing like that.”
