Nnamdi Kanu’s wife slams Judge Omotosho over life imprisonment ruling

Nnamdi Kanu’s wife raised serious concerns about the conduct of Judge James Omotosho in her husband’s terrorism trial. She stated, “In Nigeria, a judge cannot ask a defendant to enter a defence on terrorism-related charges without first reading out the written law under which the court is prosecuting the person.”

She emphasised, quoting the law, that “A person shall not be convicted for a criminal offence unless the offence is clearly defined.”

Addressing the judge’s handling of Kanu’s case, she accused him of merely reading from a prepared script, noting that “everyone could see and hear that he was reading a script handed to him, struggling to pronounce some of the words in his own written judgment.”

She added that Judge Omotosho ignored constitutional requirements, which state that no one can be convicted under an undefined or unknown law.

According to her, the judge forced Kanu to take a plea under a law he did not recognise, which he refused. She also criticised the judge for refusing to issue written rulings on serious applications, claiming that he only read and counted thousands of lines without delivering proper written judgments.
