The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has said he gave the order for a worldwide fundraising to facilitate his release from detention.

MyNigeria reported that his brother, Kanunta Kanu, had announced a fundraiser to cover the legal and medical bills of the IPOB leader, who is currently in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).

Kanu is facing charges bordering on terrorism and treasonable felony for calling for the restoration of the defunct Biafra Republic.

There have been complaints from his lawyers concerning his health, as they seek to have him transferred from DSS custody to a government hospital.

There are also calls for his unconditional release, with several groups planning to stage a peaceful protest in Abuja on October 20.

Ahead of the protest, his brother shared a flyer announcing a fundraiser to cover the IPOB leader's medical and legal expenses.

He wrote, "Join Fundraising Event for MNK on October 18th 2025. Follow the link below."

However, netizens have raised eyebrows, labelling the scheme as a familiar scam run by members of IPOB in the recent past.

However, a video has surfaced showing Kanu in court speaking with his lawyers. In the video, he can be heard speaking in Igbo, stating that he gave the order for a fundraiser.
