Former Vice President of Nigeria and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has shared his thoughts on the subsidy removal announced by President Bola Tinubu.

On Monday, May 29, during President Bola Tinubu's inaugural speech, he announced the removal of subsidy.

Moment after the announcement, there has been increase in fuel prices, causing discomfort among the citizens across the country.

Speaking on the development in Bauchi state on Saturday, June 3, Atiku stated that President Tinubu's decision to remove fuel subsidy is a knee-jerk policy action.

He said: “Between 1999 and 2007, the PDP government initiated the petroleum subsidy removal and I chaired the committee. We achieved subsidy removal in two phases but only after providing palliatives to those most affected by the subsidy removal."

According to Atiku, the PDP had more experience in tackling the effects of the subsidy removal.

He added that Nigerians ought to appreciate what they had lost.

“We have the experience as a party in government. That is what we would have done and not just announced subsidy removal without discussion with the affected sectors of the economy. I think Nigerians should appreciate what they have temporarily lost,” Atiku said.
