Nigerians descend on Ukraine President for congratulating Tinubu

Volodymyr Zelenskyy Volodymyr Zelenskyy

President of war-prone Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy has come under fire after he took to Twitter to congratulate Nigeria’s President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

On Wednesday, March 1, the Independent National Electoral Commission declared Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress as the winner of the February 25, 2023 presidential election.

Tinubu won with 8.8 million votes, while main opposition candidates Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi of the PDP and LP had 6.9 million and 6.1 million, respectively.

Several countries has since congratulated Tinubu on becoming the president-elect of Nigeria.

Ukraine President, Zelenskyy also extended his congratulations to Tinubu on winning the election, adding that his country was ready to work with Nigeria to overcome global challenges including threats to food security.

He tweeted, “Congratulations to @officialABAT on winning the Nigerian presidential election. I look forward to close cooperation. I’m convinced that bilateral interaction will be strengthened. (Ukraine) is ready to work together to overcome global challenges, including threats to food security!”

However, some Twitter users, mostly Nigerians, took to his comment section to slam him over his congratulatory tweet to Tinubu.

They alleged that Zelensky was congratulating Tinubu after Nigeria's democracy was invaded.

Bigwig Austin: We may have to start congratulating Russia for invading Ukraine. Our democracy was invaded and you're congratulating the man who did it on behalf of Ukrainians.

“Our democracy was invaded and you’re congratulating the man … on behalf of Ukrainians,” @aai_austin claimed in reply.

@valentinowpg said, “Mr. President you may have to do this congratulation once again in the nearest future. We know when you won your presidential election it was the will of Ukrainians that voted for you and voted out pro-Russian govt. Ours wasn’t the will of the people. Good luck in the war.”

@Chief_Ajiji partly: “It is now obvious that Zelensky has not learnt enough lessons”

@gaiuschibueze: “No wonder Russia wants to run over your country.”

Deinmowei Frank Ezi: Yes, they're busy crying Russia is fighting against western values and invaded Democracy.

Yet they went ahead to congratulate the people who Invaded Nigeria's Democracy.

What message are they sending across to the 200 million Nigerians who have been robbed of their mandate?

Some Nigerians alleged that the February 25, 2023 election was marred with rigging and voter intimidation.
