Former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has criticised the new dress code policy issued by the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU).
MyNigeria reported that students of OAU risk suspension for at least a semester if found wearing indecent clothes, including tattoos.
A circular issued by the institution also prohibited students from hugging and kissing members of the opposite gender on campus.
In a post on X, Sowore criticised the school's decision, which includes rustication for erring students.
He said, "STILL OAU DRESS CODE OBSESSION When the university authorities of one of Nigeria’s oldest universities
@TheGreatestIFE, can’t distinguish between “Bomb” and “Bum” and thinks being indecently dressed should lead a student to be rusticated for one or two semesters, then you know Nigerian universities are gone.
"It is troubling to see that the university authorities appear unable to distinguish between genuine threats and perceived 'indecent dressing.'
"The notion that a student could face rustication for one or two semesters due to dress code violations suggests a misunderstanding of priorities and a disconnect from the realities of modern education. Such policies indicate a decline in the standards and focus of Nigerian universities."
