Nigerian officials sign loan document from China written in Chinese language - Lawmaker

Ben Ibakpa Ben Ibakpa

A member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Ben Ibakpa has alleged that a loan document from China and written in the Chinese language was signed by some Nigerian officials.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme, Ibakpa stated that the legislative arm of government is sidelined when the country takes a loan from China.

The lawmaker who represents Ethiope Federal Constituency in Delta State stated that “the national assembly was kept in the dark in all these loans.

“The National Assembly is not part of it. Even the Bureau for Public Procurement is not aware of these loans.

“These loans are collected via the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC). They bring a bill, the Federal executive approves the bill.”

He claimed that “from what we have seen from other countries, the Chinese loans are overpriced and these people are very corrupt.”

He added that some government officials do not give a critical look into the loans because “some of these agreements that are signed, they come in Chinese language.”
