Nigerian movie producer arrested in Ghana for speaking against planned protest by Ghanaian politician

A Ghana-based Nigerian movie producer, Destiny Austin Omon, is currently in the custody of local authorities following his arrest over the weekend.

This comes after a video showing him being picked up by unidentified men surfaced on social media.

The video reportedly originated from the TikTok handle of Hassan Ayariga, a Ghanaian politician and former presidential candidate.

According to multiple reports, Omon had spoken out against and criticised Ayariga over his “Citizens’ Arrest” protest.

The protest, which was scheduled in Accra on Saturday, October 18, targeted the Paramount Leader of the Igbo Community in Ghana, Eze Chukwudi Jude Ihenetu, who had filed a defamation suit against the founder of the All People’s Congress (APC) at the Accra High Court.

Omon, a well-known critic and advocate for Nigerians residing in Ghana, is said to be currently held at the Accra Regional Police Command.

A source close to the matter, who spoke to MyNigeria.com, confirmed that he spent the night in custody.

Meanwhile, Eze Ihenetu is demanding GH¢50 million in general damages and USD 5.6 million in special damages for the cancellation of two business contracts — a poultry farm project and a funeral home venture — which he claims were lost following Ayariga’s defamatory comments.

During an interview on the Frontline Show on My CTV GH on July 19, 2025, Ayariga allegedly described Eze Ihenetu as a “scammer” and “a big problem” for some Nigerians in Ghana.

Ayariga is also accused of claiming that the Igbo leader was involved in money laundering, human trafficking, and prostitution networks, and that he controlled most Nigerian women in Ghana. He allegedly accused Eze Ihenetu of “destroying Ghana” and called for his expulsion from the country.

Eze Ihenetu, who has lived in Ghana for more than three decades and operates businesses in both Ghana and Nigeria, insists the allegations are false, malicious, and have gravely damaged his reputation. He claims the remarks have exposed him to public ridicule, death threats, and significant financial losses.

The Igbo leader is seeking a court declaration that the statements were defamatory, along with an order compelling Mr. Ayariga to retract them and issue a public apology through the same media platforms.

Additionally, he is requesting a perpetual injunction to prevent Ayariga from repeating the alleged defamatory remarks.

Muniru M. Kassim of Obour, Minta & Co. Solicitors is representing Eze Ihenetu. The court has ordered Mr. Ayariga to enter an appearance within eight days of being served with the writ.

Several calls to Mr Ayariga went unanswered at the time of filing this report.
