Nigerian govt appeals to Iran, Israel to exercise restraint, avoid wider conflict in Middle East

Israel and Iran flags Israel and Iran flags

The Nigerian Government has appealed for restraint on the escalating crisis between Iran and Israel.

SaharaReporters reported on Sunday that Iran launched a wave of drone and missile attacks toward Israel on Saturday night.

Tehran accused Israel of carrying out an airstrike on its consulate in the Syrian capital of Damascus earlier this month that killed seven officers of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Quds Force.

The Israeli military said it intercepted 99% of the incoming projectiles.

SaharaReporters also reported the G7 leaders condemned Iran's retaliatory attack on Israel, reaffirming their commitment to Israel's security.

The Group of Seven or G7 is an intergovernmental political and economic forum consisting of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States. Additionally, the European Union is a "non-enumerated member"

The Nigerian government in a statement issued by the spokesperson for the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mrs Francisca Omayuli, said that the onus is on the two countries to reflect on the universal commitment to peaceful resolution of conflict, for the advancement of global peace and security.

The statement read, “The Federal Government of Nigeria joins other Members of the International Community to call on Iran and Israel to exercise restraint, as diplomatic efforts are ongoing to ease tension and avoid a wider conflict in the Middle East.

“In this critical period, it behoves the two countries to reflect on the universal commitment to peaceful resolution of conflicts, for the advancement of global peace and security.”
