The Nigerian Army has rewarded Private Utim Terwase with a ₦500,000 cash prize after the soldier refused a bribe from a suspected notorious kidnapper attempting to escape custody.
Private Terwase apprehended the suspect, who offered him a sum of money to secure his freedom. Rejecting the bribe, Terwase upheld military discipline and handed the suspect over to the proper authorities.
The reward was approved by Major General Maxwell Dangana, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 3 Division, Nigerian Army, and Commander of Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP).
The presentation was confirmed by Captain Polycarp Oteh, spokesperson for Operation Enduring Peace. The cash reward, matching the exact amount of the rejected bribe, was presented on behalf of the GOC by Colonel Pholimon Malgwi, Commander of Sector 6.
Speaking through Malgwi, Major General Dangana commended Terwase for exemplifying the core principles of the armed forces:
"The soldier’s conduct reflects the highest standards of military professionalism, loyalty and commitment to duty expected of personnel of the Nigerian Army.
"Rather than compromise his responsibility for personal gain, he upheld the values of honesty, accountability and selfless service by discharging his duties responsibly," Dangana stated.
Dangana emphasized that the public commendation and financial incentive form part of broader efforts to reinforce ethics, discipline, and accountability among operational troops.
He added that Operation Enduring Peace will continue to recognize and reward personnel who demonstrate exceptional dedication and integrity in the discharge of their constitutional duties.
