Nigeria's Covid-19 now 55,456 as NCDC announces 296 cases, 6 new deaths

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on Tuesday, September 8, announced 296 new cases of Covid-19 in fifteen states, bringing the total confirmed figure to 55,456.

The disease control agency, in a tweet, announced fresh 183 cases in Plateau state with Lagos coming second on the log with 33 new infections.

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) came third on the log with 23 new cases, followed by Ogun state and Oyo with 16 ad 7 cases respectively.

NCDC also reported 6 cases in Ekiti as Kwara and Ondo added 5 new infections each. Anambra, Imo and Nasarawa have 3 cases each.

The body also reported new 2 infections in Gombe, Edo and Rivers. Akwa Ibom closed the log for Tuesday with only one case.

Meanwhile, six new deaths were recorded as the official total fatalities in the country peaked at 1,067 deaths.

43,334 patients who tested negative have been discharged in what validated the efforts of the government against the highly ravaging pandemic.

In Africa, South Africa and Egypt continue to take the first and second positions with 640,441 and 100,228 respectively.

On the global radar, 27,605,560 cases have been recorded with 898,269 deaths and 18,565,072 recoveries.

Earlier, United Nations (UN) called for the protection of students and teachers from continuous terrorist attacks amid ongoing efforts by the government to reopen schools during the Covid-19 crisis.

Edward Kallon, UN resident and humanitarian coordinator, made this call on Tuesday, September 8, in a statement marking the International Day to Protect Education from Attack 2020.

In a related development, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos state said that the reality of the coronavirus global pandemic showed Nigerians that there was a need for prayers.

Sanwo-Olu made the statement on Monday, September 7, at the opening ceremony of the Second Session of the 34th Synod of the Diocese of Lagos.
