A video of a young man abusing the naira while being guarded by a policeman has sparked massive reactions.
The viral video showed a young man being escorted by a policeman. The officer was seen holding bundles of naira for the young man who went on to spray naira notes on another man who was seated.
Several Nigerians have raised concerns over the act and are calling for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to arrest the young man as they did with crossdresser Idris Okuneye popularly known as Bobrisky and socialite Cubana Chiefpriest.
Recall that Bobrisky was arrested and sentenced to six months in prison after pleading guilty to abusing the naira. Chiefpriest was also invited by the antigraft agency over the same offense, but he pleaded not guilty and was fined.
In a recent video the policeman who looked on while the young man committed the offense has since been arrested for questioning. This has infuriated Nigerians as they demand the arrest of the young man.
Another video showed the Kwara State Governor’s aide, Sadiq Buhari, who was caught on video spraying naira notes at the traditional coronation ceremony of the State Work's Commissioner.
This viral video attracted several reactions from social media users, calling for his arrest.
Nigerians have since taken to social media to voice their concern. Journalist Rufai Oseni has also joined others to share his thoughts on the current videos and the inability of the police to apprehend the culprits because they are reported to be from wealthy homes.
Oseni wrote on his X page, “Nigeria na cruise, big man children dey spray money but they arrested their police guard. Hahahaha. So, the laws in Nigeria is selective. So why can't they arrest the rich man pickin. Nigeria law enforcement Don cast! Arrest of the children of the industrialist that committed the offence.”
The Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, condemned the video and said that the conduct of the policemen was unprofessional and that all those involved will be made to face the law.
Adejobi said, "we are aware of a video trending on social media, where some policemen could be seen performing guard duties to a young man and encouraging him to abuse the naira, contrary to the provisions of the CBN Act, in such a manner demeaning to the Police Officer and the Nigeria Police Force at large.
“We condemn the content of the video in its entirety as well as all forms of unethical, demeaning, un-dignifying, and unprofessional acts of its officers, especially ones that subject them to servitude.
“Steps are, therefore, being taken towards identifying the police officer in the said video in order to award appropriate sanctions. In this regard, the young man in the video is hereby called upon to present himself to the Nigeria Police Force Intelligence Department nearest to him, or contact the Lagos State Police Command, Ikeja, for proper investigation into the circumstances of the video.
“We appreciate all well-meaning Nigerians for bringing this to public knowledge and assure them that the corrective and punitive steps being taken will be brought to a conclusive and definitive end.”
