Nigeria lacks unity even after 100 years of amalgamation – Goodluck Jonathan

Former President Goodluck Jonathan believes that the greatest problem in Nigeria is a lack of unity. He argues that until this issue is resolved, any efforts towards developing the country will be in vain.

Jonathan expressed his sentiment while serving as the chairman of the Wellmann Group Colloquium in Effurun, Delta State, on Tuesday, November 26, 2024.

He criticized federal lawmakers in the National Assembly for prioritizing their ethnic groups over the country’s overall well-being.

Jonathan emphasized the importance of recognizing the benefits of unity after more than 100 years of amalgamation.

He pointed out the diversity in Nigeria, both in terms of human beings and religion, and stressed that the country has not fully embraced the concept of unity since its formation.

“There must be a reason why these people felt that bringing these two parts, the rainforest area and the savannah together, would form a better country. But that now creates a country with so much diversity: diversity of human beings and diversity in terms of religion. Then, from the amalgamation to date, we have not been able to develop ourselves to the extent that we see ourselves as one.”
