Residents in Kogi have defiled Governor Yahaya Bello as they fixed the roads leading to the Kogi Central senatorial district, home to opposition senatorial candidate, Natasha Akpoti.

Recall that Natasha, on the eve of crucial presidential and parliamentary elections had alleged that the governor's decision to excavate the road leading to her senatorial district was an act to block access to officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Ms Akpoti, who wields significant influence in parts of the state, had described the excavation of roads leading to localities and considered her strongholds as politically motivated.

After her viral allegation, a video showing residents patching the destroyed roads has gone viral.

The video was shared by a tweep with the caption: "Kogi state residents defy Yaya Bello and repair the road he dug up to hinder the passage of electoral materials."

In his defense, Mr. Bello said the move was a preemptive measure to stop terrorists from unleashing havoc on the people of Kogi State, citing a bomb blast that occurred on December 29, during a visit by President Muhammadu Buhari.

“One of the measures arrived at was to restrict the number of routes to the flashpoints to enable security agents properly mount effective surveillance on the other access roads for the safety of the people,” said a statement signed by Kingsley Fanwood, Commissioner for Information and Communications in the state, on February 24.
