Nigeria@65: Nigerians in the diaspora speak

Nigeria celebrates its Independence Day anniversary on Wednesday, October 1, 65 years since it gained its freedom from British colonial rule in 1960.

To observe the milestone, MyNigeria, via a correspondent, engaged some Nigerians living in Ghana on what progress the country has made in 65 years. Their responses reflected a wide range of opinions.

While some respondents acknowledged that Nigeria has provided opportunities and contributed positively to their lives, others disagreed, arguing that they have not benefited from the country.

A few spoke about the drawbacks, citing persistent challenges that continue to affect citizens both at home and abroad.

Among the key issues highlighted were corruption, insecurity, tribalism, religious divisions, and bad leadership. According to those interviewed, these problems have hindered Nigeria’s ability to fully realize its potential as Africa’s most populous black nation.

As Nigeria marks 65 years of independence, opinions among its citizens in Ghana remain divided. While some see reasons to reflect with pride, others question whether the country has achieved enough to warrant celebration.
