Nigeria @ 64: There is nothing to celebrate — Nigerian traders in Ghana blast Tinubu's govt

Nigerian traders in Ghana have slammed President Bola Tinubu’s government over the myriad of problems that are sinking the country into an abyss on Independence Day.

On Tuesday, October 1, Nigeria commemorated its 64th independence since gaining freedom from British colonial rule in 1960, thanks to the sacrifice of heroes like Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Nnamdi Azikiwe, and Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who fought tirelessly to gain self-rule.

Nigerians both at home and abroad came together to celebrate their heritage, unity, and resilience, reaffirming their commitment to a brighter future.

In the spirit of celebration, MyNigeria took to the streets of Accra, Ghana, to engage some Nigerian traders on what they make of the country’s progress 64 years after independence.

Chukwuemeka, a trader at Kwame Nkrumah Circle, Accra, believes there’s nothing to celebrate when there is hardship and hunger. He said:

“What are we celebrating? When people are hungry and suffering. They are increasing things, a bag of cement is increased, fuel is increased, so what are you celebrating? You only celebrate when there is something good.”

Tunde, another trader, also shared the same sentiment: “The Nigerian economy at present is very funny, the Naira is falling, people are complaining, and there is hardship all over Nigeria,” he said.

Henry, a Nigerian mobile phone repairer, also said: “There is no progress, nothing is moving. Since I was born, we are still talking about the same things: insecurity, roads, water, electricity. It is more difficult now because the cost of living is very high. For me, I don’t think there is anything to celebrate. There is no new progress to celebrate.”

“I’m not sending any good message to Nigerians because our leaders are not trying. You can only send a good message when they are trying, but they’re not, including my parents. They should try and give youth freedom, create a lot of opportunities, and empower the youth,” another trader called Babangida added.
