Nasarawa State House of Assembly Nasarawa State House of Assembly

The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has recommended life imprisonment as punishment for perpetrators of rape in the state.

The Speaker of the Assembly, Mr Ibrahim Abdullahi, made this known on Tuesday when the House deliberated and adopted the report of the Joint Committee on Judiciary, Ethics and Privileges/Women Affairs on a Bill for a Law to Enact the Nasarawa State Gender-Based Violence and for Other Matters Connected Therewith.

The bill was sponsored by the Speaker, Abdullahi, to curtail the rate of gender-based violence, especially rape, in the state.

He said the punishment would serve as a deterrent to others and would tackle the trend in the state.

The Speaker slated Monday, December 21, 2020, for the third reading of the bill.

Earlier, the Majority Leader of the House, Mr Tanko Tunga, moved for the adoption of the committee’s report after deliberation.

The Deputy Minority Leader, Mr Luka Zhekaba, seconded the motion.
