A legal practitioner in River State, Barrister Matthew Abakpa says President Buhari's decision to disobey the ruling of the Supreme Court to invalidate the old N500 and N1,000 notes is punishable with imprisonment.

Speaking to Daily Post in a chat on Thursday, February 16, Abakpa said that the action of the president was not just “a flagrant disobedience but also a contempt of court”.

The lawyer stressed that his immunity as a president saved him while stating that
his action was punishable by imprisonment.

He said, “His (Buhari) broadcast extending only the N200 old note as legal tender and invalidating N500 and N1000 notes is not only a flagrant disobedience to court order but a contempt of court, punishable with imprisonment, but for his immunity.”

Recall that Buhari in a nationwide broadcast on Thursday, February 16 directed the CBN to release the old N200 notes to ease the pains of Nigerians.

He said old N500 and N1000 would no longer be legal tender which goes contrary to the Supreme Court order restraining the apex bank from executing its early directive that the N200, N500 and N1000 notes are no longer legal tender from February 10.
